I have made a commitment to stay more connected with my students this summer. I challenge other libraries to join me in this endeavor.

900 eBook Transactions

I just checked our eBook statistics on this lovely Sunday evening. It is official. Our faculty and students have reached 900 eBook transactions since early December. Now I just need to keep the moment going with plans to revisit how to check out eBooks before the end of the school year.

Poem in Your Pocket Day
Two students stopped me in the hallway to inform me that they had just submitted the best poem for PiYPD. When I returned to the library I found their poem in the basket (love that my student aides designed the poetry return basket). After reading their poem it made me laugh and I had to share it with their teacher.

As the poetry submissions mounted I realized I needed to share this with our community on Facebook. I knew the perfect visual would be a picture of their poem. The next day I saw one of the students at the circulation desk and I called him back into my office to show him the Facebook posting. He was more than delighted with the posting and left my office with one of the most extreme smiles and eager to share his notoriety.
Such a small token on my part made such an impact on these students. Sometimes it is just the small things we do that make the biggest difference in our students. Let us all try and reach out to our students with something small this week.

20 Book Challenge Campaign
Students who read 20 or more books this year were treated to coke floats. When serving a float a young man came up to me and said, “This is the best celebration so far!” My thoughts flowed back to a comment that I heard in a workshop recently. Concentrate on small and frequent incentives rather than large incentives with a lengthy wait.

TechnoFriday
It’s our 2nd tweeting faculty meeting. Our IT coach and I demonstrated popplet and spiderscribe to an awesome group of educators. Requests for digital mind mapping strategies came in after the meeting. If you show them how to use it, they will ask.

Fiction Celebration
My student aides worked diligently on organizing the fiction collection for over a month. Once the process was complete everyone enjoyed a small celebration with their favorite food - pizza. The students not only took pride in their work but they took ownership in the process.

Twitter Inservice @ Faculty Meeting

For anyone who tweeted before the faculty meeting, we gave out free jeans passes. Over 20 faculty members scrambled to set up twitter accounts with about 10 other faculty members leading the way with existing accounts. Using reflector, Haiku Deck, and HootSuite we were able to easily get our objective for using twitter for professional development purposes out to the faculty.
